New Start

School-Based and College Support Services and Consultation

K-12 Services: The CCP New Start Program partners with K-12 schools across Colorado, providing school-based services for children and youth who have sustained a brain injury. Children and youth with brain injury receive assistance in identifying and putting in place classroom accommodations and adaptations that will promote educational achievement after brain injury. Children and youth with brain injury also receive guidance in establishing study skills and compensatory strategies that will be helpful as they return to school.  New Start staff work closely with family members as school-based services are provided, assisting with carry-over of educational and social skill development in the home and community environments.

College Services: New Start staff also work with college students who have sustained a brain injury, assisting them with personal adjustment, study skills, organization skills, and compensatory strategies – all to help the student pursue his/her college studies at the highest level of achievement. Upon request, college students with brain injury may have the opportunity to work with an occupational therapy graduate student mentor while attending CSU or Front Range Community College.  The mentor will help guide the students to the various resources at their respective college, including tutoring and counseling. In addition, the mentor will help the student develop study and organization strategies, and apply these skills to the current semester coursework requirements.

Consultation : New Start staff provide consultative and educational services for K-12 educators, as well as agencies/programs that serve individuals with brain injury. Consultative services and educational seminars focus on brain injury prevention, as well as the manifestation of brain injury, signs and symptoms, early identification, support strategies, and suggested adaptations and accommodations that promote successful re-entry into school and the community.
